Submission Guidelines

Ascent is open to a variety of voices, styles, and aesthetics. Literature that employs elements of genre or effectively moves beyond realism are welcome; however, those rooted in genre– fantasy, sci-fi, etc.– will not be considered.

Please include the following with submissions:

  • a short bio that includes major publications, awards, past publication in Ascent, link to website/portfolio, and any other relevant biographical information.
  • Submit a PDF document, and only a PDF document through the submission link below. Please do not send hardcopies.
  • Prose should be double-spaced, poetry formatted as you would like it to appear in the journal.

Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Please make sure you inform Ascent as soon as possible if a piece is accepted by a different publication.

Poetry

Poetry submissions should include 6 or fewer poems.

Fiction & Essays

There is no word count or page limit for essay and fiction submissions, but because Ascent is an online journal, longer works must be particularly engaging to keep readers glued to their screens. A work of 5,000 words is getting long to read online; a work of 8,000 words had better be riveting.

Photography

Photography submissions should be sent in JPEG format with files no more than 500 MBs. Please email your submissions directly to the editor at ascent@cord.edu  instead of the submission link.
